“And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the Lord and his statues, which I command thee this day for thy good? - Deuteronomy 10:12,13
Respect, depend, love, serve, and obey… what are these words, a vocabulary list? We often need things explained to us. We need them made simple. Moses did that for the Israelites. These are the five things God expected of them and of us. Respect - To fear God is to respect Him. Our society has lost respect for themselves and each other. This stems from their lack of fear for God. Pleasing God starts with fearing God. Depend - We talk of self-made people. Succeeding is a high priority in many peoples’ minds, but Moses reminds us that true success is to walk with or depend on God. Love - We focus on what we love the most. God wants to be in that position. He tells us to focus on Him first and He will take care of all the other things of life. Serve - No matter where we are in life, we serve something or someone. Moses reminds us to serve God. Jesus told His disciples that if they would give a cup of cold water in His name, He would reward them. Too much of our serving is for no reward because it is not service to the Lord. Obey - Obeying is hard for us because we are stubborn and willful, but obeying is necessary if we want to please Him. Jesus told His disciples that if they truly loved Him they would obey Him. Five simple words sum up how to please God, but now that we understand them we need to do them.
